Curriculum Intent

At The Grange Primary School, we value Art and Design as an integral part of our pupil’s education, vital to providing an enriched and broad and balanced curriculum. Above all we want our pupils to develop a love and appreciation of art whilst having an understanding of how it impacts and enhances the world around us. We want our pupils to have the confidence to be inspired, to experiment, to create and to let their imaginations unfold. We want our pupils to feel pride and achievement in the artwork they produce and to have no limits on their own artistic ambitions for the future. In order to do this, we plan for and deliver experiences which allow our pupils to learn a collection of skills; develop their proficiency to use a range of media; and learn about significant artists and art movements, whilst subsequently developing their design skills by expressing their individual interests, thoughts and ideas. As pupils progress, they should gain a deeper understanding of how Art and Design reflects and shapes our history, and how it contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our world. We want to equip our pupils with not only the minimum statutory requirements of the Art and Design National Curriculum but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. We want our children to use the local area as inspiration, to learn from other cultures and to respect diversity. To that end, we have carefully selected a wide range of unique and diverse artists, craft makers and designers for children to study.
